Steilneset

Memorial to those tried and executed for witchcraft
Built:2010
Developed by: Varanger Museum and Norwegian Public Roads Administration

Through the memorial by Peter Zumthor and Louise Bourgeois, Vardø has been put on the map in the international architecture and art world.

In addition to the memorial, the surrounding area also contains several traces of the city´s history.

After the completion of the memorial during the Summer of 2011, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration decided to buy the area around the memorial in order to plan the holistic development of Steilneset.

The aim was to link the cultural and natural heritage of the area together and provide interactive experiences. In 2005 works commenced to create a hiking path which allowed the regional culture to be followed and understood as part of a one thousand year commemoration. National Tourist Routes Norway has worked on an extension and completion of the track. It is striving to improve the offerings for visitors to Vardø as well as locals.

Varanger Museum is responsible for publicity and information about the memorial, and a project group under the management of Varanger Museum is working to develop a communication strategy.
