The workshop at “Slippen” has played a central role in Vardø´s maritime economy since its establishment in 1911.
During the post-war years, the maritime industry at Slippen merged with the Bye family business interests, but has been dormant since the mid-1980s.
Vardø Museum is currently acquiring and restoring parts of Slippen. The museum is supporting marine carpentry shops and traditions in an active harbour. The museum is also overseeing the restoration of the boat Einar 2 alongside the further development of coastal culture in Slippen. The boat club in Vardø will also continue to use the workshop.
Slippen is one of many buildings of high cultural and historical significance in Festningsgata og Belsen.
