In 1914, when the construction of the Grand Hotel in the centre of Vardø reached completion, it was Northern Norway’s most prominent hotel and its structure was unsurpassed.
The building has weathered over the years and over its life hosted a variety of events but has been lying unused for several years now.
A silent rescue operation led by the Bertheussen family has been going on for years. With patience and craziness, through personal risk and hard work, the Bertheussen family has never lost faith that the Grand Hotel will again open its doors.
Grand hotel is one of several buildings with cultural heritage value in the city part Festningsgata og Belsen .
